The 2026 Barometer reveals a decline in artisan morale, with 46% reporting pessimism about their business future, compared to 31% optimists. However, this trend does not reflect a loss of confidence in their work: 85% of artisans still express passion for their profession, and 79% wish to pass on their know-how to new generations.
These findings indicate that it is not vocations that are weakening, but rather the conditions under which artisans practice their trades that are becoming tougher. Despite these challenges, craftsmanship maintains a positive image among the French: 93% have a good image of artisanal trades, and 82% would encourage their children to choose an artisanal profession. Craftsmanship meets current aspirations such as having a concrete, independent job rooted in local communities, also attracting 43% of non-artisanal workers for a career change.
Facing these challenges, the Chambers of Trades and Crafts (CMAs) offer local support for business creation, development, recruitment, training, digital transition, and business transfer. 88% of artisans who have used their services report satisfaction with the support received, highlighting listening skills, quality advice, and human support.
The CMAs are committed to helping artisans move forward and develop their businesses. For any project or need for support, you can contact your CMA at 3006 (free service and calls).
This barometer was conducted by Vivavoice among nearly 1300 respondents (650 artisans and 650 project leaders) between May 4 and June 22, 2026, in Metropolitan France and Overseas France. A third part was carried out with a sample of 1000 French people aged 15 and over.
