The Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) has published its quarterly observatory of energy retail markets for the second quarter of 2026, analyzing competition in metropolitan France.

The objective of this observatory is to present a quarterly analysis of competition in the retail energy markets, including electricity and natural gas. For the first time, the CRE includes a section dedicated to Guidelines, listing committed suppliers and their compliance levels.
Regarding residential customers, between March 31 and June 30, 2026, an additional 121,000 sites switched to market offers for electricity, a decrease from the 232,000 in the previous quarter. A total of 15.84 million residential sites are now on market offers. Of these, 49,000 chose an alternative supplier and 72,000 a historical supplier. As of June 30, 2026, 19.2 million residential sites (54.8%) remained on regulated electricity sales tariffs (TRVE), a decrease of 168,000 customers.
In the natural gas market, 47.5% of the 10.23 million residential sites, or 4.86 million, have a contract with an alternative supplier. Alternative suppliers lost 9,000 sites this quarter, while historical suppliers lost 70,000.
For non-residential customers in electricity, alternative suppliers gained 26,000 additional sites on market offers, reaching 2.49 million (46.0%). Historical suppliers saw a slight decrease of 2,000 sites, totaling 1.36 million on market offers in the second quarter of 2026. As of June 30, 2026, 71.1% of non-residential customers are on market offers (3.86 million out of 5.43 million), and 1.57 million are on TRVE, a net decrease of 10,000 sites.
In the gas sector for non-residential customers, the distribution between alternative and historical suppliers remains stable, with alternative suppliers holding a 60.5% market share, representing 374,000 sites.
